18/07/09 – London!
After Ruth and Tom’s wedding on Friday, we figured it’d be worth spending a bit of time in London rather
than heading straight back to Zurich so we drove up from Kent on Saturday morning straight over to my grandparent’s place in Gants Hill (Ilford) to join them for lunch and generally check how things are going.
We had booked tickets to visit the Dali Universe exhibition in County Hall since we had seen it many times
in passing and had always wanted to visit. After finding a 2-for-1 offer online, we thought the opportunity was too good to pass up. We therefore headed into London just after 15:00 and headed straight there. The exhibition was an impressive collection of drawings, paintings and sculptures, along with a lot of information on Dali – helping us to understand the quite twisted mind that created this impressive artwork.
Thankfully the exhibition was only about an hour’s worth of viewing since we had a dinner appointment at 18:15 at Smolensky’s on The Strand. There we met an old friend/colleague of mine called Mick, and his Dad Michael who was over visiting from Dublin. We had a nice steak and a bit of a chat, it was good to
catch up and hopefully we’ll have another chance again soon! Unfortunately we had to head off quite soon afterwards as we had Covent Garden Comedy Club tickets for a show starting at 20:00. We met Jennie and Tom outside the club (it was in Heaven in The Arches underneath Charing Cross – fantastic venue for a club) and headed on in. Despite not recognising any of the names off the comedians, it was a very funny show. We then headed for a nightcap with Jennie and Tom (since we couldn’t really get that much catching up done in the comedy club) and then needed to head home since it was already getting towards midnight.
Unfortunately it took quite some time to get home because some moron had decided it was a good idea to jump on the tracks at Leytonstone so they had to turn off all the power and wait for the police to come and ‘collect’ him. That did not please us or anyone else that was stuck on the tube for 45 minutes while we waited! We managed to get back to my grandparent’s safely anyway, so headed straight to bed so that we could get up early the next morning and head off back home to Zurich!
